Slot Machine positioning

Volumes have been written on this item, and the contention and disagreement about where the "hot" one armed bandits are installed in a casino are still intense – sixty yrs after slot games were 1st installed in gambling dens.

The traditional rule is that the better slot games were installed just inside the main entry of the casino; so that individuals walking by would see actual jackpot winners and be baited to come into the casino and play. Our standpoint is that this is no longer the case.

The great majority of the big name casinos today are herculean complexes and it’s no longer possible to see inside from the sidewalk, so there’s no longer a reason to situate the ‘loose’ slot machine games in close proximity to any entrances.

Another classic rule is that loose one armed bandits are placed on the major aisles inside the casinos, again so that more potential players could see winning jackpots and be influenced to play. Importantly though, we find that this also is no longer a universal rule.

What casinos found over the years is that people walking down the busy aisles were frequently on the way to somewhere else. If they played slots at all, they would simply put in their loose change because they happened to be walking by. Win or lose, they would very often not stop to keep playing. And the last thing a casino wants is for someone to win a jackpot by playing only a few coins and then not stay to put it all back in!

Nowadays, casinos are constantly changing their philosophy about where to place the loose slot machines.
